Once in a Blue Moon

A blue moon! See it on New Year's Eve!

Unless you are as unlucky as I am (heh, I know Trudy is in the same boat) you will be treated to a blue moon on New Years eve!  Ok the moon won’t really be blue, but it will be full and also the second full moon in one month and that my friends, is a blue moon.  Gosh it’s been a while since the last one, May of 2007 I think.

The last blue moon on New Years was in 1990 and the next one won’t be until 2028 so while you are ringing in the new year, please take a moment and go outside and look up at the moon.  Hey go out early and take the kids.  It will be a long time before you can do it again and your kids will be adults by then!

Now why am I lamenting my  and as it happens Trudy’s bad luck?  Because even though we are not located all that close together we aren’t so far apart we both will escape the New Years storm heading our way.

I believe we will be having a Northeaster, aren’t we just the lucky ones.
Only in the northeast in winter the skies are so crispy clear in the winter and we get clouds. Mother nature is not our friend ..lol

Hey did you know that there will also be a partial lunar eclipse during the blue moon? Visible from Europe, Africa and Asia! Yay!

Awesome! Thanks for the heads up Gabe.

Yeah Trudy, 12 to 18 inches here, subject to change of course.

A blue moon is the thirteenth full moon in a year. There are normally twelve per year. May of 2007 had two full moons (on the first and thirty-first) but there were still only twelve full moons in that year.

My comments didn’t show up… do they have to be approved or something?

  6. Chris Hardwick on December 29th, 2009

I just tried to comment again and it didn’t go through but my complaints about them not showing up do go through… what gives?

I came across this clip by accident – Don’t know if you’ve posted it before but it may be on youtube also.

Chris, not sure what the problem was other than the link you put in, apparently it took that one and the next too. Sorry about that, it’s the anti-spam software.

EDIT: Now here’s something interesting, I approved it from the back end and it STILL ended up in the moderation queue. Weird. I also had one of MY comments flagged, jeeze. Maybe the last software “upgrade” has a bug in it and just maybe that’s why wordpress is putting out another “update” shortly.

The older seasonal definition of a blue moon is the third full moon in a season that has four full moons.

    Thanks Tom.

“May of 2007 had two full moons (on the first and thirty-first)” Am I misinformed that a lunar month is 28 days? 1+28 is 29 not 31. What am I missing?

  16. Tom on December 30th, 2009

Ok, here’s the scoop for your editus:

The full moons in May were:
May 2 at 06:10 am EDT and
May 31 at 9:04 pm EDT

So they are indeed a lunar month of 29.53 days.

Now the question is: was this not a blue moon in Europe and surrounding areas? The time of May 31 at 9:04 pm EDT on the North American East coast, in Europe is actually June 1 is it not?

  17. Tom on December 30th, 2009

Nevermind, I’m being too picky. This blue moon IS a blue moon in Europe too.

Ah, you guys are smart! But… c’mon, does anyone know the names given to the OTHER full moons in the year besides the blue moon, or the betrayer’s moon?

Maybe that should be my next riddle, because I know the names!

Me too, blue grrrr… hahaha :)
