The Head of a Witch
I can’t help myself, here’s another image that lends itself perfectly for Halloween. This is the Witch Head Nebula. I couldn’t see the witches head at first but once I recognized it – WOW this is great!
This nebula is known as a reflection nebula. Fine dust in this case is being lit mostly from the star named Rigel located in Orion. I want to see if I can get an image of this for my own, it’s pretty cool. It will be competing with my ambition to get an image of the Horse head nebula* (IC434). The image here is from APOD and thanks to them for it.
I maybe dating myself but I think it would be great in one of those black light posters.
*I do have an image of the horsehead but now I want a better one. To get it, or an image of the Witch Head means getting up at about 3 am, not that getting up is a problem but I have to have a good sky too. Been awful lately.

great picture !!!!!!!!
Ooooooh, skeery pic…Love it!
SPOOKY!!!!!!!!!
Wow, Tom, isn’t nature amazing. You can definately see the witch’s face, cool!!! Thanks for all you do, still enjoying your blog in Montana, Gail
Good thing we all (we witches) do not have a face like that!!!!! It is a wonderful sight though!!!!!
That is really an awesome pic. The Black-Light idea would really be cool.
OK I am a little dense. I don’t see the witch’s head. . . Perhaps someone can explain it to me.
What is cool, however is that the nebula is being illuminated by Rigel. Incidentally, since we are making Halloween references, Rigel is the origin of the aliens on the Simpson’s Halloween Specials. By an astounding coincidence their language, Rigelian, is exactly the same as English.
you know, I just don’t see it
Try taking the image as a whole, get back from it a bit. That’s what I did and wham there it was.
Wow! I can see it, hooray!. I can’t see The Bull to this day, even though I know where he is
awesome..and amazing . just curious though do the dust particles move? Does the picture change ? Was just wondering how the dust particles worked in space. Mine never seem to move unles I use Pledge..sorry couldnt resist. Keep up the good work Tom

Hahahahhaha, pledge. Yeah I’m sure the particles are moving, in what direction is the thing. That is a huge structure so it’s hard to tell.
