Stuff
Last night we had a nice sky so I took out the little scope to do some looking around. Tops on my list was Venus, and as an added bonus Mercury was sitting right on the horizon. Any time I get to see Mercury I consider it a treat.
I spent some time looking around Orion, the nebula of course, but I was looking at some of the stars that make up the constellation that I don’t normally think about. It took quite a while to get to Orion. I didn’t do any setup with the scope, just plopped it down and traveled around the sky by looking through the eyepiece, try that sometime, you won’t know where you are looking but you will enjoy it. I came in after a while; it was -19 C so it was getting a little cold, turned out to be the coldest part of the night too.
I can’t wait until spring, the work on the observatory will begin, more about that later.

Wow…An observatory? Maybe I’ll have to come and visit!!
Tom, I like to get out and look at Orion and all its array. I got a good look at some nebula’s the other night in Orion. Venus is up high now in Utah, and Mercury is just barely there. I like the looks of Jupiter in the A.M, but it is too cold yet to stay out long. I sure would like an observatory.
Yep, I am putting one together. I can leave my scope set up all the time and just go outside and turn it on. Plus I can do a real accurate drift alignment.
Nice one! With an observatory you will be spared all the stting up rigmarole and concentrate on enjoying the sky. Are you doing your wond deign or getting a pre-fab?
I am doing a simple design. I need to stay within some limits so I don’t have to deal with town regulations. I will be seeing the zoning administrator Monday evening, to see how far I can push the limits.
So, do you guys with observatories also have a portable scope?
One of the guys at the club shows up for nearly all the club’s events at the observatory. I’ve never seen him bring a scope yet. He claims he likes to peak at what everyone is looking at. I like to choose.
I’d think that would be half the fun, looking through other scopes. Like you I like to choose what I’m looking at while at the home sky.
I can’t speak for people with observatories (yet), but I do have a portable scope, a small ETX, a great grab and go scope. Had it out just the other night looking at some of the neglected (by me) stars in Orion. Lots of doubles in that constellation.
Ahh, administrators (shudder)hope your meeting went well.
