Off the Deep End?
I got up and turned on the news and was greeted with this story. Apparently Nowak has gone off the deep end.
That’s what I’d call driving nearly 1,000 miles, putting on a mask, and apparently trying to kidnap another woman she saw as a threat in her getting the affection of another man. I thought she was married. Where’s her husband? I will no doubt hear a lot about this one because her husband (??) is from just up the road a bit so the local news is all over it. She has been charged with attempted kidnapping among other things, and will be in court today.
Good lord, so much for her astronaut career. Maybe someone should have told her she wasn’t in this state, so she may not get away with it.
Here’s the best version of the sordid story I’ve found in print.
EDIT:Â Charges are being upgraded to attempted murder.

Well, if you compare her shuttle crew picture with the one above only 7 months later… I’m gonna say HEAVY drug use (crack ho). And based on the other items found in her possession it’s pretty clear (to me anyway) that this was going to go WAY beyond kidnapping.
This only proves that everyone, I do mean everyone on the planet is only human. I can only imagine what a potential astronaut goes thru to get into and thru the program. Something simply snapped. We’ve all been there done that and have a fantastic tee-shirt to show for it!
I agree with Noelle. Everyone is human.
To much work? Not enough work?
Too bad.
I’d say that the Mission pic was essentially a “glam photo” for her, you know, make-over, hair the whole 9 yards, happy, proud, all smiles, best face forward. The above pic? … after driving 1000 miles straight IN A DIAPER no less, no sleep, little or no food/water, no make-up, jealous, obsessing (probably for weeks prior), angry, under arrest, caught, exposed, mortified, intensely questioned, spent/drained after discharging all of that jealous rage, publically humiliated, worried sick about her life, career, family now in ruin. No crack or meth needed IMHO.
Yes, we’re all human, but still don’t get Noelle’s statement. Sure there is stress in the astronaut training program. But still she “had it all” with the family, a “top notch” career, fame and nice compensation. So, I’m wondering what was missing, why wasn’t she happy or satisfied? Seems she wanted even more.
THOSE DISTURBED EYES SAY IT ALL!
It is too bad she threw everything away like that – if proven, she does have the presumption of innocence (yeah right). It was quite a fall, something must have snapped. It sounds like her life was in some kind of downward spiral for a little while. For some reason she was desperate.
On the other hand, it sounds more like the murder charges are more of an effort to get something to stick, you know, a bargaining chip to get her to plead to the attempted kidnapping charges.
The worse I can imagine is something similar to this happening on a prolonged future space flight. My personal opinion is, if blame is to be placed, military – and particularly flight training – exposes flaws in some people that make them human time-bombs. I’ve seen it on a smaller scale several other times… But whatcha gonna do?
She’s a Navy test pilot… she has years of military discipline, she was under stress LONG before her astronaut career. Now that she’d finally achieved her goal of being an astronaut and have actually flown a mission… I imagine the stress level would actually be down from what she went through to get there. I’m tellin’ ya… drugs. But we shall see.
LOOKS LIKE A LITTLE SPACE SICKNESS TO ME!!
Everyone is human?
I’m not.
Yeah, we gathered.
Just kidding.
