Yes It’s Real
It almost looks like some artist concept — it isn’t; the image was taken by the Cassini spacecraft. Click to enlarge.
The moon Enceladus is in the center of the image. Two jets of spray can clearly be seen at the bottom of the moon. These jets have been determined to be water emanating from the interior of the moon. The resulting ice from the moon spray is thought to be a contributor to Saturn’s rings, which show up in this image, above the moon.
The reflection of light off the rings in the background, adds to the surrealistic feeling I can’t help get looking at this image; as does the artifact created by compression and cosmic rays hitting the camera detector.

moon as artist concept?…
Cassini photo of Saturn moon Enceladus…
NIFTY!
I love it…
Saturn is truly the most intriguing planet!! And one of the most interesting to observe in a small scope.
Saturday night i got to show the cub scouts (and leaders) Saturn with some moons, and Mars together. Mars is a tiny orange ball these days. Saturn is always a crowd pleaser. Unfortunately, i didn’t have a chart of which moons where which before hand. So, i said, “the really bright one is Titan, after that – no idea”. My palm pilot was able to identify the Galelean moons of Jupiter.
Best comment of the night: “Am i supposed to see red belts on Jupiter?”
