Moon Shot

Saturday evening I got the telescope out in a effort to see if I could get a decent image of Mars. It was supposed to be clear and the moon was going to be out, so I figured it may cut down on the brightness of Mars some and I might be able to use that to my advantage. It didn’t turn out that way; clouds! I tried anyway and not too impressed with the results. So I figured I’d take a few moon shots since it was so bright it washed out any hope of seeing any DSO’s.

To see the image and read the description click below.

Moon through clouds

The image above is principally of the crater Plato (north is up). It is the large (101 km) dark crater in the upper part of the image. There are small craters (craterlets) within Plato, but I need to use more magnification to see them. Plato is also known for Lunar Transient Phenomena, which is a pretty interesting topic, I didn’t see any. Just getting this image through the clouds and not have it so blurry you couldn’t make anything out was pretty anomalous actually.

To the right of Plato the Montes Alps appear to be split by the rille Vallis Alps. which looks to be connecting the Mare Imbrium (south) and the Mare Frigoris (north).

Looking down and to the right, (southeast) you can see three prominent craters: (clockwise) Arstillus (55 km), Autolycus (39 km), and Archimedes (83 km). This area is known as Sinus Lunicus, and is famous for being the fist place that a spacecraft from Earth went. The Russians did it with Luna 2 in 1959.

Continuing clockwise, the crater Timocharis is in the lower part of the image. Looking northwest, the not so diminutive crater Le Verrier can be seen; at 20 km it isn’t exactly a craterlet. Finally, slightly east of due north the Montes Recti shows up well, it looks like a loaf of bread to me (ok so I’m hungry), at any rate it points the way to the Montes Teneriffe.

My ‘first look’ at the moon through a telescope (1971, Florida, 12-inch reflector) : “Wow! It’s a big rock! How does it stay up there?” Now, 34 years later, it’s every bit as fascinating.

  49. Sadiq on November 15th, 2005

    Just GREATTTT!
We are pretty much cut off from stuff like this huh!
    Question that I picked up from….. http://news.bbc.co.uk/onthisday/hi/witness/july/21/newsid_3058000/3058833.stm

Can you remember watching the giant leap for mankind? How did you feel?

Let me remember … 21 July 1969, and I was eaxctly 13 years old growing up in Pakistan….. there was excitement, there was a new and different energy that encouraged all to keep abreast with what was happening – the television and radio stations made it a point to mention the latest updates from NASA – and ofcourse – I do remember – there was a defined group of religeous heretics that tried to poison public opinion by saying that the US was orchestrating the entire episode just to have an edge over the USSR and that it was defying the realm of the Almighty Allah etc etc. Hmmmm….. I do remember that …. and crazy huh?

What excites me is the fact that I am so instinctively sure that there maybe a sure source of energy resources available in abundance on the moon which we can use to our advantage. Lets face it – theearths fast depleting resources and the open abuse of the ecology by mankind leaves us very little room to pin more hopes on whatever is available. Ifear that our younger generation will face and see harder times…… it will literally be a survival of the most resourceful and most fittest era in the history of mankind. What does the moon have to give to us….. or is it just a matter of …. the old fable of the Old Lady Spinning Moon Dust for all to see??

  59. Teresa on November 15th, 2005

I love the moon. In regard to our resources and their depletion; conservation will go a long way to help. It is wrong for anyone to dirty the place up and walk away. Clean as you go. We plant trees when we cut them down. Also, you should take a look at the Abiotic Oil theory. We may not have as much of a problem with oil as we think. Of course, continue looking for cleaner sources of energy…methane would be a good start. If we could do more with shale oil too; Alaska has the potential to out-produce Saudi Arabia in oil if shale oil production comes about. All you have to do is dream, think and DO.

    Tom,

Great image of the lunar surface. What are you using to take the images?

  71. Tom on November 16th, 2005

    Hi Dan,

    10 inch LX200 @ f 6.3
    Meade DSI
The image was 75 frames stacked in Registax, tossed another 50.

Didn’t use a filter because it was taken through a cloud which explains the softness. I took a couple of others but haven’t gotten around to them yet.

Mars is proving to be tough because the sky just won’t coorporate.

    Cheers

  76. MJ on November 17th, 2005

    Thanks Jocelyn
It is good to be alive.
It is too easy to focus on the negative. (war, tsunami’s, poverty, etc…)
Glad to have all this beauty around us to help ease some of this worldly strife and angst.

  77. Joycelyn on November 17th, 2005

MJ, Thank you for your response, indeed it’s wonderful to be alive to behold the beauty of creation and most importantly appreciating it…the positive outlook on life and our world is always the best way to go. It makes us look at life in whole new prospective rather than focusing on
the negative situations in our world.
